Advanced Manufacturing for Aircraft Assembly

Knowledge exchange

 

One of the KhAI-ERA objectives is to twin KhAI with European research and innovation organizations. Within the frame of research topic B both KhAI and Fraunhoffer-IFF researchers visit each other in order to exchange scientific knowledge. This task is implemented by tree categories of researchers:

  • top-level professor/associated professor (PhD or Dr.Sc.) with 10+ experience of research in the area of advanced manufacturing of aircraft assembly;
  • mid level -- postdoc (PhD) with 3+ years experience of research in the area of advanced manufacturing of aircraft assembly;
  • young scientist -- PhD student/researcher currently making research in the area of advanced manufacturing of aircraft assembly;

The scope of scientific knowledge exchange

Year 1:

  • Definition of evaluation indicators for aeronautic structures assembly methods assessment;
  • Advanced aeronautic structures assembly methods analysis from technical and economical point of view;
  • Usable manufacturing tools (accessory, equipment, tools) for aircraft units assembly

Year 2:

  • Aeronautic structures assembly quality criteria definition;
  • Analysis of modern methods and tools for aeronautic structures assembly quality inspections;
  • Aeronautic structures assembly robotisation and automation

Year 3:

  • Analysis of manufacturing companies which produce modern impulse equipment and tools for assembly-mounting works in aeronautic industry;
  • Comparative analysis of modern FEM complexes for impulse process modeling. 

 

Set up of joint experiments

 

During the KhAI-ERA project implementation in order to perform KhAI and Fraunhoffer-IFF twinning their experienced, mid-level and young researchers set up the following joint experiments:

Year 1:

  • Accurate-cost factors estimation for various assembly methods;
  • Modern equipment benchmarking for units and aircraft aggregates assembly in simplified assembly jigs.

Year 2:

  • Rivet joints quality control with modern optic, metallographic, radiographic and other control devices
  • Benchmarking of modern equipment for aeronautic structures assembly quality inspection.

Year 3:

  • Benchmarking of modern impulse equipment and tools for assembly-mounting works in aeronautic industry;
  • New types of impulse tools design (single and double-stroke);
  • Impulse riveting, burnishing, bolted rivets and tightness bolts installation processes simulation with advanced FEM complexes application.

 

Training modules development

 

KhAI’s experts will establish permanent contacts with Fraunhofer-IFF’s trainers and lecturers in order to organize training modules and deliver workshops in advanced manufacturing for aircraft assembly for experienced researchers and summer schools for young researchers. Training modules are intended for KhAI`s experienced, mid-level and young participants selected in competitive basis taking into account their teaching activity, experience, gender issues and language skills.

 

Training modules on advanced manufacturing for aircraft assembly cover the following topics

Year 1

  • Advanced aeronautic structures assembly methods;
  • Manufacturing accessory for assembly-mounting works in aeronautic industry.

Year 2

  • Advanced methods and inspection tools for aeronautic structures assembly quality control;
  • Aeronautic structures assembly robotization and automation.

Year 3

  • High-performance impulse (single-stroke) equipment and tools for assembly-mounting operations in aeronautic industry;
  • Peculiarities of impulse processes simulation in advanced FEM complexes like Abaqus, LS-Dyna, etc.
